The morning might’ve started with murder, but the evening drew to a close with cuddles, scratches, and endless licks. I paused in the doorway of the kitchen, holding Mom’s large crockpot of vegetarian chili, captured by the sweetness of Watson’s euphoric expression as the two men he loved most in the world lavished attention on him. Barry, his bright purple and blue tie-dyed tank top nearly muted from all the dog hair covering the fabric, continued to hold Watson between his legs, Watson’s back against Barry’s stomach, as he received a shoulder and neck rub—at least the equivalent, if Watson had actual shoulders. All the while, Leo knelt in front of him, scratching his exposed belly and causing Watson’s left leg to twitch in pure puppy-dog fashion.

“I spent the last two and a half hours making dinner, but do you think I’m going to get a massage like that?” Bringing my attention to her, my tiny mother paused next to me, a skillet of cornbread in her hand. As she cocked her head, the remaining strand of auburn in her long, silver hair glistened in the soft light of their house. “Upon further inspection, I don’t think I want a massage like that. It might prove awkward to have my husband rubbing my shoulders as my future son-in-law scratches my belly.”

“Mom!” I barked out a laugh as quietly as I could. “Hush!”

“It’s only a matter of time until Leo is legally family. We all know it.” Her blue eyes twinkled at me. “However, until you make it official, if your handsome park ranger offers belly rubs, I might just take him up on it.”

Proving she wasn’t as quiet as I’d thought, Barry glanced over and cocked an eyebrow. “Same goes for me, though I won’t turn down a belly rub even after the nuptials.”

Sputtering, I felt my cheeks flare.

“Sorry, folks.” Breaking contact with Watson, Leo thankfully skipped over the whole soon-to-be-son-in-law thing and lifted his hands in the air, twinkling his fingers. “These are for corgis only. And possibly a moose or elk after they’ve put on a really good show for the tourists.”

Watson’s rapturous expression transferred to a puppy-dog scowl and he grunted.

“So demanding.” Laughing, Leo turned back to Watson, scratched his belly, pressed a quick kiss to his nose, and then stood. “We’ll have to resume later, buddy. Looks like dinner is served.”

“Perfect!” Barry followed suit, extricating himself from Watson’s weight, standing up—a little bit slower and with more grunting than Leo—and headed toward the table. “I’m starving! So hungry I could eat a cow. If I did that sort of thing.”

“Don’t you dare.” Shifting her grip on the skillet, Mom made a shooing gesture away from the table. “Go change your shirt. If you sit down in front of the stew like that, there’ll be enough dog hair falling in that it really won’t be vegetarian anymore.”

Barry gave an exaggerated wounded expression and hurried off toward their bedroom.
